Confirmed: Porta paid in full to save licence

7 May 2008

America Movil’s Ecuadorian mobile subsidiary Conecel (Porta) has met the government’s demand of USD480 million to renew its operating licence for 15 years, a spokesperson for telecoms regulator Conatel confirmed to BNamericas. The spokesperson claimed that the reversal of a previous decision to re-auction Porta’s concession when it runs out in August had been taken in the interests of minimising disruption to customers of Ecuador’s most popular cellco. Porta reportedly had 7.09 million subscribers at the end of February, ahead of Telefonica’s Movistar with 2.62 million and state-owned Telecsa (Alegro) with 482,000. Porta launched 3G services over a W-CDMA network in Quito in August 2007.
