The Philippines leading fixed line and mobile operator, Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT), said the number of people signed up to its mobile services via subsidiaries Smart Communications and Talk N’ Text (Piltel) topped the 32 million-mark at the end of the quarter. The Filipino Inquirer newspaper reports that Smart ended the month with 20.6 million subscribers while Talk N’ Text had 11.5 million subscribers. Smart added a net 280,000 new users in the first quarter, while Talk N’ Text added 1.25 million subscribers, it said. In its first-quarter financial statement, PLDT added that wireless service revenues have grown 8% this year to PHP22.5 billion (USD548 million), when compared with the first quarter of 2007. Meanwhile, total revenues from broadband and internet services reached PHP2.5 billion, up 51% on 1Q07, as its broadband subscriber base climbed to 661,000 customers. In addition, Smart’s wireless broadband service Smartbro added 48,000 subscribers in the first quarter, expanding the total user base to 348,000. Wireless broadband revenues grew to about PHP919 million in the first quarter of this year, compared to PHP414 million for the same period in 2007.
