Fijian telecommunication firm Amalgamated Telecom Holdings (ATH) has reportedly acquired majority ownership in Vodafone Fiji from Telecom Fiji. Reports from local website Fijivillage confirm that the legal process to transfer a 51% stake in Vodafone Fiji was completed on 31 March 2008. ATH chief executive Tomasi Vakatora says the move was taken in order to separate Vodafone Fiji and Telecom Fiji as part of the new telecoms regulations in place in the country and reflects ATH’s continued confidence in the Vodafone group. Vakatora added that as a result of the ownership change, Telecom Fiji will be able to venture into other market areas, although it will have to stay out of the mobile market for the time being. UK-based Vodafone Group has retained its 49% interest in Vodafone Fiji under the restructure.
