Wataniya: still waiting for wireless spectrum from Israel

2 May 2008

Palestinians have accused Israel of wilfully delaying the launch of a second Palestinaian wireless network by refusing to release wireless frequencies to Wataniya Mobile. Israel’s Communications Ministry last year agreed in principle to allow Wataniya, a subsidiary of Qatari telco Qtel, to become the second Palestinian cellco, but has thus far refused to release the spectrum, blaming security concerns. ‘We think [the delay] is political,’ said Suleiman Zuheiry, the Palestinian Authority deputy minister of telecommunications and information technologies. ‘All the time, they’re telling us that it’s a military issue, and the military is using these bands in the Gaza Strip and Southern Lebanon.’
