Morales reaffirms Entel nationalisation plan

2 May 2008

Bolivian President Evo Morales has confirmed that the government will nationalise incumbent fixed line operator Entel, announcing that it will take ‘absolute control’ of the telco in which Telecom Italia owns a 50% share. In his May Day speech Morales was quoted as saying ‘Basic services, (whether) energy, water or communications, cannot be in the hands of private business. They are public services…Bolivia wants partners, not owners.’ According to local press reports police were sent to stand guard outside Entel offices in La Paz and the eastern city of Santa Cruz following the announcement, which comes just two years after Morales launched his programme of nationalisation of the country’s energy industry.
