Lock in the experience

2 May 2008

Vodafone plans to lock new mobile phones so they can only be used on the Vodafone New Zealand mobile network and says it will charge NZD50 to unlock new handsets if people want to use a different operator. Vodafone’s spokesman, Paul Brislen, claimed ‘This is being done to protect the customers’ experience of the Vodafone brand. If a customer takes a Vodafone mobile to another network, the customer won’t be able to access the Vodafone experience and services’. Unsurprisingly the move has come at the same time as its rival Telecom is preparing to launch a GSM network, whilst New Zealand Communications (NZC) is also entering the fray.
