State-run Indian telco Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) has posted an 8.9% increase in its net profit to INR5.07 billion for the year ended 31 March 2008. Turnover for the year decreased to INR54.08 billion from INR55.83 billion in the previous year. Of the total, INR38.4 billion was generated from basic services, INR8.8 billion from wireless operations and INR6.8 billion from other operations. At the end of March MTNL claimed 3.8 million basic wireline subscribers in Dehli and Mumbai, as well as 160,916 wireless in the local loop (WiLL) and 570,591 broadband customers. In the wireless sector the group claimed 3.24 million GSM customers, of which 2.51 million were pre-paid. In the fiscal fourth quarter, MTNL wireless customers generated a monthly ARPU of INR452, down from the INR477 generated in the previous three month period.
