Entel targets 150k WiMAX subscribers by year end; reports 1Q results

Chilean telco Entel is expecting to have 100,000-150,000 subscribers to its WiMAX network by the end of 2008, writes BNamericas quoting Richard Buchi, Entel’s corporate general manager. The company expects the figure to reach a million by 2010.

In a separate but related announcement Entel reported a 5% rise in net profit in the first quarter of 2008, on the back of growth in mobile subscribers and value added services. Net profit for the three months ended 31 March 2008 was CLP33.3 billion (USD73 million) compared to CLP31.7 billion a year ago. Revenues were up 7% year-on-year to CLP238 billion from CLP222 billion in 1Q 2007. EBITDA rose 5% to CLP94.5 billion from CLP89.7 billion. The company ended the quarter with 5.77 million active mobile lines, up 12% and giving it a 41% market share. Wireless revenues rose 11% to CLP185.2 billion while wireless EBITDA rose 4% to CLP77.2 billion.
