Liberia: telecoms reform in full swing

22 Apr 2008

Liberia’s Ministry of Post and Telecommunications (MPT) is calling on the domestic telecoms industry and the public at large to cooperate fully with the government’s plans to implement telecoms sector reform in the country. According to the Monrovian newspaper The News, the MPT says the ‘effective mechanism’ for reform of the industry has now been put in place by the regulator, the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA), to drive competition in the market. The MPT said the new proposals include measures to unbundle the local loop in order to ‘expand the number of players in the market’, although it added: ‘There shall be a cap on the number of national service provider/carriers in the telecom service sector to a fixed number of providers, namely: cellular/mobile, wireline, rural telephony and fixed wireless (WiMAX, CDMA).’
