An international cable link between Japan and Russia is set to be switched on in June. The 570km cable, which has been deployed by Japan’s NTT Communications and TransTeleCom of Russia at a cost of USD50 million, connects Hokkaido and Sakhalin. The 640Gbps link is responding to increasing demand for high speed data transmission between Japan and Europe, reports Kyodo News International. TransTeleCom, which is wholly state-owned via Russian Railways, owns a 55,000km national backbone network in Russia.
