Embratel reports 5.5% rise in Q1 turnover

Brazilian telco Embratel has reported a 5.5% year-on-year rise in Q1 revenue for the period ended 31 March 2008 to BRL2.35 billion (USD1.40 billion), helping drive a significant improvement in net profit from BRL131.8 million in 1Q07 to BRL280.8 million in 1Q08, it said. The telco said group EBITDA reached BRL628.6 million in the first three months of this year, up 22% on the same time a year ago, driven by its corporate phone service Livre, which increased its subscriber base to 1.514 million, and its residential phone service Net Fone, which reported 718,000 subscribers by the end of March.
