eircom seeks a little give and take

According to the Irish Independent newspaper, eircom has told the government it can provide between 50% and 55% of the population with broadband access as fast or faster than anything available elsewhere in Europe. The telco says it can offer speeds of up to 25Mbps within seven years provided there are changes to way it is regulated, particularly in relation to the regulator’s methodology in calculating what rate of return it is allowed to earn. Eircom has also proposed a ‘Plan B’, which would see it provide broadband to 70% of the population within five years. In return, however, the government would provide tax incentives for upgrading exchanges where converting to fibre would not normally be commercially viable.
