Econet post-paid users forced to pre-pay, must wait for 3G

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, the largest cellco in the turbulent country, has introduced a pre-payment system for its contract subscribers, effective from 1 April, to help it cope with rampant inflation, reports AllAfrica.com. Subscribers will now be required to pre-pay a bill equivalent to the previous month’s usage to cover the following month’s estimated charges. A company statement said: ‘With month-on month inflation at higher levels, this makes it difficult for the group to sustain credit payments.’ Econet CEO Doug Mboweni clarified that the operator is not phasing out post-paid services. Mboweni also said that the group was still awaiting regulatory approval for a 3G licence, despite claiming to have a 3G network installed and ready to launch.
