Zanzibar Telecom (Zantel) revealed yesterday that it plans to launch a mobile phone money transfer service next week. The service – called Z Cash – is expected to come to market before a corresponding money transfer service named M-Pesa to be launched by rival operator Vodacom later in the month. ‘We are introducing Z Cash next week. It’s essentially the same kind of service that Vodacom is going to introduce. It’s just that we are going to get there first,’ said Noel Herrity, Director General of Zantel. Herrity added that Zantel had 1 million subscribers at the end of March 2008, up from 684,000 at the end of 2007.
