Zain receives licence to operate in Saudi Arabia

Zain Saudi Arabia, a subsidiary of Kuwait’s Zain telecoms group, has won a licence from the Saudi Telecommunications and Information Technology Commission to operate a mobile service in the country. Zain paid USD6.1 billion for the third mobile licence and has granted a USD335 million contract to Motorola to deploy and manage its new network. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Saudi Telecom Company (STC) is the country’s current leading mobile operator with an estimated 17 million subscribers at the end of 2007. A consortium headed by Etisalat of the UAE under the banner Mobily is the second operator with an estimated eleven million customers.
