FET contracts Ericsson for 3.5G expansion

Taiwan’s third largest cellular operator by subscribers, Far EasTone (FET), has selected Ericsson to carry out an HSPA network expansion. On completion of the deployment FET will offer high speed HSPA coverage to up to 95% of the population. Under the agreement, Ericsson will enhance HSPA coverage and also help the cellco to expand its transmission network capacity and enhance its mobile positioning service solutions. Ericsson will also be responsible for spare parts management service as well as support services. Network deployment and integration have started. FET had 6.21 million subscribers at the end of 2007 according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database. It launched 3G services in July 2005 and its first 3.5G networks in September the following year.
