Saudi Arabia’s second largest cellular operator, Mobily, says it had 11.1 million subscribers by the end of 2007, doubling the end-2006 total. The cellco has also said that it is close to signing a deal to acquire a local internet service provider, which has not yet been named, Reuters reports. Mobily bought WiMAX operator Bayanat Al-Oula last year for USD400 million. After less than three years in business Mobily now claims around 39% of the Saudi cellular market, according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database. It reported profits of SAR1.38 billion (USD368 million) in 2007, up from SAR700 million a year before, while sales were up 44.3% at SAR8.44 billion.
