AIS outlines WiMAX spending plans

27 Mar 2008

Advanced Info Services (AIS) has announced plans to spend THB1.5 billion (USD48 million) on first phase deployment of a new WiMAX network. Thailand’s largest cellco by subscribers plans to install between 350 and 450 base stations in suburban areas and major cities, as well as areas where there was no fixed line network. AIS –yet to select a vendor for its full rollout – is among twelve companies to have received trial WiMAX licences.

In separate but related news, AIS expects to launch 3G services in the next six months at a cost at USD50 per subscriber. The cellco has joined forces with TOT to upgrade to 3G services over the 900MHz band. Meanwhile rival DTAC has teamed up with CAT Telecom to develop 3G on its 850MHz frequency.
