First Media uses Sandvine to improve broadband network services

26 Mar 2008

Indonesian broadband access provider PT First Media (formerly PT Broadband Multimedia) has selected Canada-based Sandvine to deploy its Sandvine PTS 14000 intelligent broadband network solutions to improve First Media’s network, deliver new services, and ensure efficient use of its network resources. First Media, which has been working with Sandvine since June 2007, plans to increase its broadband uptake from 18,000 subscribers in mid-2007 to 150,000 in 2008 and to increase its overall subscriber base to one million users by 2009.

Indonesia’s Ministry of Communications and Informatics predicts that internet users will reach almost 80 million by 2010. However, broadband subscribers only represented 900,000 of the total by the end of 2007 and First Media hopes to dramatically reduce the price of high speed internet access to make it accessible for more Indonesians. First Media was established in 1994. Its network comprises 3,657km of two-way 750MHz Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) cable. The company is one of the largest providers of high speed broadband internet, pay TV, and high speed data communication services in the country.
