20 Mar 2008

012 Smile.Communications (Smile.Com), a subsidiary of Internet Golden Lines, has applied to the Israeli Ministry of Communications to extend its current licence and receive additional ones to allow it to enter the wireless arena. According to a Smile press release, the company is seeking permission to provide: cellular services as an MVNO; mobile communication services using WiMAX and Wi-Fi technology; IP-based mobile communication services (cellular Voice over Broadband (VoB)); and ISP services over GSM.

Smile.Communications believes that its request is in accordance with the recommendations of the Gronau Committee with respect to encouraging competition in the mobile segment. It also noted that currently there are no similar issued licences nor a legal mechanism for obtaining them.
