Embratel to complete initial WiMAX deployment by month-end

Brazilian fixed line operator Embratel Participacoes has revealed that the initial implementation of new WiMAX networks in the country will be completed by the end of this month. In the first phase Embratel is rolling out wireless broadband services to twelve state capitals Belem, Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Curitiba, Fortaleza, Goiania, Porto Alegre, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Sao Luis and Sao Paulo. The operator has invested BRL175 million (USD104 million) to get the service off the ground. Its WiMAX infrastructure will eventually number 1,018 radio base stations covering 61 municipalities, with the option of expanding to reach a further 200 municipalities.
