3G services in Moscow given military go ahead

20 Mar 2008

Following pressure from the country’s licensed 3G operators and the Russian IT and Communication Union, Russia’s Defence Ministry has agreed to allow 3G frequencies to be used in the Moscow region. The Ministry had blocked the launch of UMTS services as it used some of the same 2100MHz frequencies for its own missile warning system. It is now expected 3G services will be launched in Moscow by the end of 2008.

In related news, Vimpelcom has announced that it is planning to launch its 3G networks simultaneously in the Southern Russian cities of Sochi, Krasnodar and Rostov-on-Don during the second half of this year.
