Reuters reports that Egypt’s telecoms regulator, the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA), has confirmed that six companies have expressed an interest in the new fixed line licence due for auction in June this year. Orascom Telecom and Etisalat Misr, which both expressed an interest in previous talks of a potential licence, were among the first to place bids. The remaining four bidders were France Telecom, Egypt’s Alkan Holdings, Egyptian network solution provider Giza Systems and an unnamed Saudi firm. Alkan Holdings has said in a separate statement that it will be leading an alliance of local and international investors.
