1.5 million users to migrate to GSM by June 2008

BNamericas, quoting local newspaper Infobae, has reported that approximately 1.5 million wireless subscribers will have to migrate to GSM from TDMA and CDMA before June 2008. All three main operators, Movistar (owned by Spain’s Telefonica), CTI Movil (a subsidiary of Mexico’s America Movil) and Personal (the mobile unit of local telco Telecom Argentina) plan to shut down their TDMA and CDMA infrastructure by the middle of the year. Customers migrating to GSM will be able to keep their existing numbers. Movistar has the largest subscriber base still using TDMA and CDMA, with approximately 1.4million users, while 99% of Personal’s subscriber base already uses GSM technology.
