17 Mar 2008

Vietnam Post and Telecommunications (VNPT) has announced that the country’s first commercial telecoms satellite will be launched on 12 April. Vinasat-1 will be capable of handling more than 10,000 telephone, internet and data transmission channels. People living in remote areas will be among those who benefit most, as the satellite is expected to provide them with access to modern telecoms services for the first time. Speaking at a briefing ceremony in Hanoi on March 12, VNPT Deputy General Director Nguyen Ba Thuoc said the successful launch of the satellite will be of great importance to Vietnam’s socio-economic development. Worth more than USD200 million, Vinasat-1 will be positioned at 132 degrees East Longitude in a geostationary orbit, and has a design life of 15 years.
