Kenya Data Networks to expand nationwide WiMAX network

Kenya Data Networks (KDN), in which South African firm Altech acquired a 51% controlling interest on 1 March 2008, has announced plans to expand its WiMAX network using Alvarion’s BreezeMAX suite. The company will offer voice and data services to business and residential customers in seven additional cities across Kenya, as an expansion of its Butterfly network.

The KDN network comprises a 1,000km fibre-optic link from Mombasa to Nairobi, a 450km fibre-optic network in Nairobi, a fibre-optic link to the Ugandan border, over 450 Wi-Fi hotspots and a satellite-based international gateway.
