Having launched a trial UMTS/HSDPA network in time for the Summit of Head of States of the Commonwealth in central Kampala in November last year, Uganda Telecom (UTL) has extended coverage of its 3G network to Greater Kampala, Entebbe and Jinja. It plans to roll out to other districts like Mbarara by the middle of the year. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, UTL claimed 822,000 wireless subscribers at the end of 2007, making it the smallest of Uganda’s three wireless network operators at the time, behind Celtel and MTN. In January this year a fourth player, Warid Telecom, launched operations and claimed to have signed up 150,000 customers in its first three days. A fifth player, Saudi-owned HITS Telecom, is expected to launch by the end of this month over a network supplied by Alcatel-Lucent.
