No roaming regulation

New Zealand’s Telecommunications Commissioner, Ross Patterson, says there are insufficient grounds to recommend regulating the prices of mobile roaming, reversing a draft decision announced last August. The industry watchdog was initially concerned that the country’s third mobile licensee, NZ Communications, was struggling to sign roaming agreements with the two incumbent operators, Vodafone and Telecom New Zealand. But now that the parties have settled on roaming deals, Patterson is eager to let market forces dictate the charges: ‘Where parties have negotiated a commercial agreement, regulatory intervention should not be lightly undertaken,’ he says.
