DoCoMo to stop signing up 2G ‘mova’ users

11 Mar 2008

NTT DoCoMo, Japan’s leading mobile operator by subscribers, will stop taking orders for its second-generation cellular service ‘mova’ once it has exhausted its current stock of 2G handsets, reports Jiji Press citing people familiar with the situation. Handset makers stopped supplying mova models to the cellco at the end of last year and although DoCoMo intends to continue operating the 2G network until maybe July 2012, it is trying to migrate users onto its high speed FOMA 3G network. By the start of this month mova users accounted for 10.136 million of the cellco’s total user base of 53.214 million, according to data compiled by the Telecommunications Carriers Association (TCA).
