Zain confirms Lebanon bid

10 Mar 2008

The general manager of Kuwaiti cellco Zain, Barrak Al-Sabaih, has confirmed that his company intends to bid for one of two mobile licences to be auctioned in Lebanon this summer, and expects to be qualified by the country’s authorities next month. Zain already runs one of two GSM networks in Lebanon under the name MTC Touch, but its management contract with the government expires in June 2008, and it intends to compete for a licence and two-thirds ownership stake in the operator in the state’s delayed auction. Other interested parties include Qatar’s Qtel, UAE-based Etisalat, Egypt’s Orascom and Bahrain’s Batelco. A consortium including Germany’s DeTeCon International currently manages Lebanon’s other GSM operator under the Alfa brand.
