South Africa’s Altech has acquired a 51% stake in Kenya Data Networks (KDN) plus two other ISPs, Swift Global and Infocom (Uganda) for a total of USD75 million. The stake has been purchased from the Sameer Investment Group, Telecompaper reports. Altech and Sameer have agreed to inject USD20 million into their joint operations to help KDN expand into west Africa. KDN currently operates in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda and its plans for expansion include rollouts in Zambia, Congo and Gabon. Swift Global is an ISP in Kenya and Tanzania, offering corporate services including VoIP and VPNs over KDN’s infrastructure. Infocom provides broadband and dial-up internet access, WiMAX connections, satellite international gateway and IT services in Uganda, and has partnership agreements with cellco Celtel covering co-location of equipment and other services.
