Vodafone trials femtocell technology

4 Mar 2008

Vodafone Group has announced it has begun technical trials alongside equipment vendors Huawei and Alcatel-Lucent, to explore the potential of 3G femtocell technology. The group says the pilot aims to assess how effective the technology is to deliver wireless high speed data and voice services inside homes and business locations. The technology works by detouring wireless calls and data access to a landline network via broadband, in turn freeing space on outdoor wireless networks. Vodafone is also exploring whether deployment of femtocells could generate lower network operating costs which could be passed on as savings for the consumer.
