Safaricom to launch HSDPA next month

27 Feb 2008

Safaricom, Kenya’s largest cellular operator in terms of subscribers, has completed trials of HSDPA technology and plans to launch its first commercial services next month under the Bambanet banner. The firm says it has spent USD20 million on its 3.5G rollout so far, with initial network deployments coming only in Nairobi. The HSDPA service will offer peak download rates of 3.6Mbps at launch, though this will later be upgraded to 7.2Mbps. Services will be available on both a pre- and post-paid basis.
