Visafone launches commercial services

25 Feb 2008

Nigerian unified access service (UAS) licensee and CDMA operator Visafone has launched full commercial operations in over 40 cities across twelve states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) of Abuja. The company received its concession from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) following its acquisition of CDMA operator Cellcom in June 2007. Visafone went on to purchase two other CDMA players, Independent Telephone Network (ITN) and Bourdex Communications in November 2007 and January 2008 respectively, giving it an immediate active subscriber base approaching 100,000. Visafone has the backing of 13 Nigerian banks, which have pooled USD200 million to complete the integration and expansion of its CDMA2000 1xEV-DO infrastructure.
