eMobile turns up the heat: no plans to charge monthly fee for voice calls

25 Feb 2008

Japanese mobile newcomer eMobile will not charge monthly subscription fees for voice call services when it starts offering nationwide call products on 28 March 2008. Throwing down the gauntlet in an USD83 billion domestic telecoms industry, eMobile will instead charge users JPY18 (USD0.17) per 30 seconds of call time, as well as offering an unlimited calls package priced at JPY980 per month – akin to a rival product offered by the country’s fastest-growing cellco, Softbank Mobile. The new cellco is using handsets supplied by Toshiba and Taiwan’s High Tech Computer for the new service. eMobile, which is backed by the eAccess group, currently offers wireless internet access by piggybacking on DoCoMo’s network.
