22 Feb 2008

Chinese state controlled radio yesterday announced that the government will confirm plans to halve the number of mainland telecoms players from six to three before the National People’s Congress meeting in March. According to the restructuring plan China Telecommunications Corp (China Telecom), China’s largest fixed line operator, will acquire the CDMA network of mobile operator China United Telecommunications (China Unicom), while China Unicom’s GSM network will be merged into China Network Communications Corp (China Netcom). China Mobile Communications Corp (China Mobile) will merge with niche fixed line operator China Tietong Telecommunications Corp. Finally, China Satellite Communications Corp will be merged into an as yet unnamed state-owned aerospace industry group, according to the report.
