MTS aquires 100% of Omsk unit

Mobile TeleSystems (MTS), Russia’s largest mobile operator by subscribers, has acquired a 9% stake in its operating subsidiary in Omsk from a private investor for USD16 million to take its ownership to 100%. MTS bought a 51% stake in Mobile Communication Systems (MCS) in 2000, and bought additional stakes of 32.5% and 7.5% in 2001 and 2004 respectively. MCS provides GSM-900/1800 mobile services in the Omsk region, which has a population of 2.1 million.
