Sri Lanka’s leading mobile operator by customers Dialog Telekom says its 3G network will be used to provide live news feeds for the local Derana TV station. ‘Reporting instantly from the location through 3G video calling reduces the time lag that is usually associated with [news transmission],’ Dialog said in a statement. The feeds will be captured and transmitted with digital cameras and 3G handsets. Dialog already provides an SMS text news service in partnership with Derana. The cellco launched its W-CDMA network in August 2006 and also acquired a television broadcasting licence in October that year via the purchase of Asset Media, which will allow it to introduce real-time broadcast mobile TV for its 3G users in the future.
