The Russian mobile operator SMARTS has contracted Alcatel-Lucent for the supply of GSM/GPRS/EDGE radio equipment to upgrade and expand its existing wireless network. The project will be implemented in several phases, with the major part to be completed by April 2008. SMARTS will expand coverage and network capacity in the regions of Penza, Samara and Saratov, and the republics of Tatarstan and Bashkortostan. Alca-Lu also will upgrade SMARTS’ existing network infrastructure. Based in Samara, SMARTS provides digital cellular services in 16 Russian regions where it serves around four million customers.
