FCC approves T-Mobile takeover of SunCom

12 Feb 2008

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has approved the merger of T-Mobile USA and smaller cellco SunCom Wireless, which has operations in the US, Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands. In September 2007 T-Mobile USA, a subsidiary of Germany’s Deutsche Telekom, agreed to pay USD1.6 billion for SunCom, whilst also assuming around USD800 million of SunCom’s debt. Following the green light from the US telecoms regulator, the companies expect to close the transaction by the end of this month. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database SunCom had 347,000 mobile subscribers in Puerto Rico at the end of September 2007, whilst it has a total of around 1.1 million customers in the Carribean and southeastern US states. T-Mobile USA has almost 28.7 million customers nationwide.
