Summa snaps up Russian Far East operator

6 Feb 2008

Summa Telecom has increased its presence in the Far East of Russia with the acquisition of Esotel-Rustelekom, a wireline operator and GSM-1800 licensee in the Republic of Yakutia. The value of the deal was not disclosed. The Republic of Yakutia is home to around 950,000 people, CNews reports, with mobile penetration standing at approximately 40%. Summa Telecom won ten out of twelve available mobile licences in the Far East and Urals Federal Districts in the government’s GSM spectrum auctions last year, beating larger rivals such as Vimpelcom. Vimpelcom has appealed the licence awards, however, saying the auction favoured new entrants such as Summa.
