Telecom Egypt and Alcatel-Lucent have signed a USD125 million contract to deploy a new submarine cable network linking Sidi Kerir in Egypt to Marseille in France. Named TE North, the cable will enable the Egyptian telco to expand international connectivity and will provide diversity away from existing cable routes. In addition TE North will help Telecom Egypt enhance its network capacity, allowing it to operate as a wholesale. Spanning 3,100km, TE North will deliver a capacity of 128×10Gbps on eight fibre pairs, making it one of the largest cable systems in the region. As a result, Telecom Egypt will be able to meet the growing demand for broadband services and will aid Egypt’s quest to become an international communications hub between Europe and Asia/Africa.
