GTel becomes seventh mobile licensee

1 Feb 2008

Pham Hong Hai, Head of the Telecom Agency under the Ministry of Information and Communications, has confirmed that Global Telecom Corporation (GTel) has been awarded a licence to provide mobile services in the 1800MHz frequency band. The company becomes the country’s seventh wireless operator. Having now received the concession, GTel is able to participate in the race for 3G licences to be held in the coming weeks. Some analysts have warned, however, that it could be two years before GTel is ready for commercial services, saying that since the cellco will be deploying an 1800MHz-based network more base transceiver stations (BTSs) will need to be deployed. GTel is a joint venture between Russian mobile giant Vimpelcom and Millenium Global Solutions Group of the US.
