1 Feb 2008

Comstar, a Russian fixed line operator, announced yesterday it has begun to roll out a mobile wireless broadband network in Armenia based on WiMAX technology. In a statement, Comstar president Sergei Pridantsev said ‘We intend to launch the network this year and, therefore, become the first and the largest wireless broadband Internet operator in Armenia’. Comstar, part of the Sistema group of companies, has selected Airspan Networks to supply base station equipment for the project, although it declined to provide any financial details of their deal. The new WiMAX network will cover around three-quarters of the Armenian population, a Comstar spokesperson said.
