The Dubai-based telecoms group VTEL Holdings has purchased Africa Cellulaire (Africell) Burundi, which operates GSM services under the Safaris banner and also holds a WiMAX licence. According to a report in East African Business Week (Kampala), VTEL will bring additional financial backing to the cellco to enable it to expand its network and services – with a particular focus on the broadband sphere – from the second quarter of 2008. VTEL will also launch its first WiMAX network in Georgia in the second quarter, it said. VTEL Holdings is a multinational corporation that operates in emerging markets in the Middle East region, Africa, Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Latin and Central America, and the Caribbean. No financial details of the Burundi purchase were disclosed.
