28 Jan 2008

Venezuelan mobile operator Movilnet, part of state-run telco CANTV, installed 65 CDMA2000 1x base stations in 2007, increasing coverage in twelve states and bringing the total number of CDMA cellular sites in the country to 442, the company said in a statement, reported by BNamericas. The majority of the new towers are in border areas including Maroa, Provincial, San Carlos de Rio Negro and Samariapo in Amazonas state. The company now also provides coverage in the areas of Cararabo del Meta and Puerto Infante, in the south of Apure state. Other states that received improved coverage included Bolivar, Guarico Purtuguesa, Falcon, Yaracuy, Aragua, Brainas, Carabobo and Cojedes. Movilnet, which ended September 2007 with 8.9 million mobile users, expects to launch full commercial GSM services in May, CANTV’s president Socorro Hernandez said recently.
