CATEL expands coverage

Azeri telco Caspian American Telecommunications (CATEL) has installed a new base station in the Kurdamir region of central Azerbaijan, and is in the process of commissioning another in the north-western region of Agstafa, reports Azerbaijan Business Centre (abc.com). CATEL offers both fixed wireless and cellular services via its CDMA2000 infrastructure. Its mobile offering, FONEX, was launched in January 2006. Coverage is concentrated in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula, but it is gradually expanding across the country. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, CATEL had an estimated 30,000 subscribers to its FONEX service at the end of 2007. The total capacity of its network is reported to be 50,000 numbers.
