Ancel closes 2007 with over 500 base stations

25 Jan 2008

Ancel, the mobile unit of Uruguay’s state-owned telco Antel, has over 500 base stations in operation, supporting its GSM/GPRS/EDGE and 3G services, reports BNamericas. Around 100 transmitters serve the capital Montevideo, with the remainder distributed throughout the rest of the country. Last September Ancel launched 3G services over 60 aerials in the capital, using W-CDMA HSDPA technology. It is reported that in January 2008 alone, the cellco has deployed a further 20 3G base stations, in the municipalities of Montevideo, Maldonado, Colonia, Rocha, Paysandu, Salto, Soriano, Tacuarembo, Florida and San Jose, and expects to install another 180 by the end of December, along with another 70 GSM/GPRS/EDGE capable transmitters across the country to improve quality and expand coverage.
