Vodafone gets new chance with Vodacom

24 Jan 2008

The UK’s Vodafone Group could be handed another opportunity to increase its stake in South African subsidiary Vodacom beyond the current level of 50%. The remaining 50% is held by Telkom South Africa, a majority share in which is being chased by Dubai-based Oger Telecom. Telkom may be required to offload its interest in Vodacom in order to clear the way for the deal with Oger, which already owns 75% of another South African mobile operator, Cell C. The Financial Times reports that this could be good news for Vodafone as it bids to increase its presence in Africa. Vodacom is the largest cellular operator in South Africa and also has operations in Tanzania, DR Congo, Mozambique and Lesotho.
