Walt Disney no Dumbo? Plans to launch Japanese mobile service on 1 March

22 Jan 2008

The Japanese subsidiary of entertainment group Walt Disney plans to launch a mobile service in the country on 1 March 2008, piggybacking its MVNO venture on Softbank Corp’s network, and using its pricing plans and retail channels. Disney’s decision to launch as a mobile reseller in Japan follows the demise of its US MVNO operation on Sprint Nextel’s network last year and an ill-fated service based on its ESPN sports TV network in 2006. Disney’s first Japanese handsets will be manufactured by Sharp.
